I have an ongoing problem with a sink waste - and have in the past replaced the whole lot - sink component - and all the waste :( :(

so now after about 2 years its leaking again

the connection to the sink - if i tighten up then clicks and carrys on turning and then tightens and clicks again - so dropping off the thread

i have put kitchen towel around the joints again to try and locate

but what can I use to put on the joint and seal it once an for all - silicone sealer or plumbing boss white type stuff. as i say this now the third complete waste unit I have purchased

first was part of the sink unit from MFI and awful quality
next two were from plumb centre

i will goto screwfix tomorrow and buy a cheapish silicone sealant to put on all the joints
I have some unopened CF1 (i think thats the name) and other top quality products i used on a cast irn gutter - but they have not been opened and seems a waste at £15 a pop

Is this a Kitchen sink, assume stainless steel? The supplied washers with any decent waste should be ample to seal it without the need for anything else. If it wont tighten now and the thread is goosed then I doubt sealant will help. New waste needed: http://www.screwfix.com/p/sink-waste/77140

Make sure the mating faces on the sink are clean and there shouldn't be any reason why it wont seal. I would check though the trap/wastepipe isn't wrongly aligned and pulling on the waste, the constant stress could be causing the thread in the waste to wear and hence loosen the waste creating a leak.

thanks , yes stainless

yes that maybe the issue the new waste was slightly different and so did have to be moved very slightly 1/8th inch - if i remember - the issue is i guess i need to start again and that means completely dismantling a washbasin cupboard on the other side of the wall - as it goes via another room and out...

this is the waste assembly - so i must have purchased the 3rd one from screwfix

this is the sort of waste in the sink - but without the overflow bit

more like this

Deffo the waste leaking and not the trap? (Had a few issues with the cheap S/fix traps, McAlpine far superior.) Both those you've linked should be good quality, but plastic doesn't tolerate stress too well. I would check it's not under a slight strain, that may be enough to cause it to move slightly over time, hence the leak.

thanks for all your help

just been under the sink and its wet from the connection from the sink overflow and the waste assembly

and i have got the sink with the overflow

this type of unit
http://www.screwfix.com/p/strainer-...FxFRLJPc4N6rjynQpGknycdBJQn92RNW7y!1743917350

and where this unit joins
http://www.screwfix.com/p/sink-wash...FxFRLJPc4N6rjynQpGknycdBJQn92RNW7y!1743917350

as i screw it up - it gets to the top quite tight and easily with no issues and then clicks when i really tighten - - when undone and pulled out - it appears to align OK- I remember I did move the unit slightly back to get it to align

so the pipe fits in nicely with the rubber seal - the screw screws on ok and tightens up and as I turn it to really get a tight fit it jumps and goes slightly cross threaded and twisted which in turn then puts a slight twist the whole waste assembly.
could i be tightening too much at all ..... but still get water leaking

to late now to do much more , so i will look in depth tomorrow - still have the old waste in the shed, so can have a play around a bit , dont think I have the sink overflow unit

do you think it maybe a faulty

Think you've a knackered thread there somewhere, it should progressively tighten and be watertight. Shouldn't have to screw it up ridiculously tight, the seal only needs to compress slightly to make it watertight. If it's been over tightened in the past, if the threads are shredded then replacement is the only option i'm afraid. :(

Ok thanks for that - I will take out and try the old waste just the connection ring and see if that tightens all OK with out jumping off - try and identify which bit to replace - otherwise I will replace both at £15 not too much - currently looking for work - so keeping costs down

are these two components OK quality
or am i wasting money?

The Opella waste should be good quality, i'm not 100% on the Screwfix traps though, had a few issues with them leaking before, although unsure now whether they were Floplast or a cheaper option. McAlpine or Nuflo may be better quality IMO.

You will pay silly money there, local independant plumbers merchants probably about £5ish. I went to PC for one 40mm waste bend as they were round the corner from the job, paid about 4x the usual price.....

Your tap doesnt have washers! It contains a ceramic cartridge, which will have to be replaced as one unit. Spares: http://www.south-services.co.uk/

thanks - I will have a look tomorrow - I can always do in the week

not sure what the tap make is - is there a diagram somewhere on how to replace the cartridge - is this a common fault - only 5 years old and leaking

thanks for all your help and advice appreciate

if you have a computer issue pop over to http://www.techguy.org/ and PM me

My fault, should have read it properly, MFI taps weren't the best as I found out. If you can get it to bits, (difficult to say how without looking at it), take innards to a merchant who may be able to sort you out, otherwise new tap i'm afraid....

I would have expected the grub screw, when removed, to allow the handle to be removed, exposing the brass innards, which could then be removed with a spanner.

yep, that was the plan on friday while the merchants open - and i just could not slide this handle off at all
even tried a screwdriver to lever off

the cover turns slightly - so I'm sure there will be a cartridge on there if thats how they work

no big deal , i guess i will have to change the tap - looks ok to change as i put valves on the connectors so i can isolate the tap and its one of the single hole jobs and beside the bowl rather than behind - so i should be able to unscrew the single screw holding it

issue will be the other half who - loves the tap and height of the neck - any advice on good quality cheap mixer taps of this style

If the current tap only goes 90deg from off to fully open then it'll have a cartridge in there as opposed to a washer. As for new taps, TBH I think you get what you pay for, cheap taps dont seem to last so well. I replaced my MFI effort with a Swirl from S/fix, Franke, Bristan etc all seem to be of decent quality.
