Water based paint on top of solvent based

I have previously coated my wooden garden furniture with solvent based furniture oil. Am I okay to now change this putting a semi matt garden paint which is water based on top? Any advice is appreciated.

Sand down the surface to allow a key, prime it and then paint your chosen colour.
