We've recently had a new open chamber fireplace fitted, however we've noticed some rainwater coming down onto our cast iron basket (now rust-city!).

After some reading, we've had a cowl fitted to the chimney (the correct one identified after a smoke test) but we're still getting some water down in heavy rain.

Any suggestions?

Hi Difficult to be precise with out sketch / photo. However in the area that i trade chimney DPC / trays are fitted on all new builds. (Those of you that holiday in Cornwall will understand why) With the increased intensity of rainfall we are now experiancing across the UK. DPC chimney trays should be considered. The idea being any water penetration into the chimney above the roof line is stopped and diverted via weep holes out on to the front apron / roof. With an existing chimney it would be a costly excise to fit. If the budget will not stretch to this a cheaper option would be to coat the chimney with several coats of a clear sealant.
