We just bought a house, 1905, solid 1m thick walls. The gable end is coated with some kind of render or thick paint, and looks in good condition, no obvious cracks or distress anywhere.
Finding a suspicious looking damp patch inside, we checked the outside gable wall as described above, and found the "render" had formed a bubble, which burst quite readily and from which poured water. Pretty surprised, but explains well the internal damp wall.
Any ideas how to manage water getting behind the "render"? I can't really see where the water is getting in behind the "render" - should I be thinking in terms of stripping the entire gable end? I assume there is water in other areas that are not bubbling up.
Any ideas thought really welcome!
