How near the top should the water level be. After changing the float valve and putting a slight bend in the float arm. The water level still appears high although now shutting off.
What level should it be from the top of the tank, please.

If the cistern is fitted with a warning pipe the inlet valves must close when the level of water is not less than 25mm below the warning pipe.

Thanks. But my warning (overflow) pipe has a dipper pipe approx. 4". After my adjustment, the bottom of the dipper is submerged about 1.5" and there is 2.5" to the outlet level. I have read that it is to stop insects. TBH I can't remember what it used to be when first fitted. Although it sounds feasible - does it sound right and your "25mm below the warning pipe" relate to when the pipe goes straight out without a dipper pipe?

Measured from the bottom of the hole in the side of the tank that the overflow passes through, I.e. as if there was no dipper

The dipper prevents air currents and wintry draughts

Just to confirm then that the 2.5" of air space in my dipper under the output hole is OK. I got confused as some questions asked when googling refer to syphoning problems and I cannot remember whether the water level was ever under the bottom of the dipper. I if had been, I'd have to bend the arm a lot to lower the water below the bottom of the dipper by 25mm.
