Water Softener - which one?

I am looking to have a water softener installed and I have no idea what features I need to look for. The softener will be installed in the garage so the size of the unit is not important, but price is.

What are the best brands that are relatively cheap to buy and will be economic/reliable in the long run and serve 4 people?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
