Water Softener

A freind of mine wants to fit a water softener in his house at the main stop cock. I am thinking of the salamander. Would members know of any suitable products ?

Do you mean an actual softener that uses salt crystals or one of the electromagnetic type gizmos that you wrap around you cold water pipe? If the latter I have heard a product called Scalewatcher is good.
