water tank supports

i live in a ex council house which had the chimney running up the centre of the house, i have now had that removed from top to bottom,at present in my loft i have to A frame type of supports comming down from the ridge and up to were the perlin support is.
I am wondering of they are ridge supports or were they water tank frame supports
your help in this matter would be appriceated

Photos would help or a diagram.. sounds a little like truss roof.. Are there any signs a water tank was there?
