water tank supports

i live in a ex council house with the chimney stack going up the middle of the house. I have since ahd this removed from top to bottom, and in my attic i have to A frame type supports attached to the ridge either side of the old chimney stack, I am just wondering if these are load bearing for the ridge or if they were for the supports for the old water tank
