WEEE Charges

I have noticed at least two of our wholesalers now include a WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) charge every time they sell a lamp, and I am now being charged around an additional 15p for every lamp.

What is this charge for?

I thought the use of CFLs and the like was supposed to be being encouraged. I can just about understand being charged for their disposal, but not their purchase.

I'd use a wholesaler who doesn't charge for WEEE if I were you.

They're trying to charge you for them to dispose of what they're selling you, the WEEE regulations give them a responsibility to provide this service.

However, the regulations also oblige the distributor to provide this service free of charge.

So decline to pay the charge, and make sure you take them back lots and lots of stuff to dispose of!!!

wholesalers can pay 'a company' a fee to remove their responsibility to dispose of them ... thats what the extra charge is for on the lamp i think

there are supposedly places u can dispose of free of charge ... as the supplier has paid the charge

dunno these places though so im not much help to you ... reco light springs to mind

Rob, that's not much of a clue. Can you give me a bit more help?

Its highly likely that they have joined a WEEE complanace scheme. They must "declare" the ammount of WEEE they put ount onto the market per annum and are charged depending upon that amount. The fee for the lamp will be an add on cost to cover them for there loss.

The way I understand it is the the lamp manufacturer has a responsibility to contribute to the cost of disposing the lamp, which they are getting from you the buyer.

I work in street lighting so we deal with thousands of old lamps each week. The recycling people now collect the old lamps for nothing (used to charge £400 per load). I assume they get subsidised by the manufacturers, otherwise I cant see that they is enough money in the scrap value alone.

Why moan about 15p? Is that too much to care for the environment?
