I need to do a small amount of welding on my van, I always used to disconnect the battery to stop the alternator getting trashed, is there anything else I need to do to protect the ECU and other electronic stuff??

And is it still ok to stitch weld cills as opposed to fully welding?

Disconnect the battery, but you will loose any memory connected. So if you have a coded radio you will need the code to listen again. Probably best to let the capacitors discharge (an hour or less) before you start. Ensure you always have a good earth for the welder, well clamped as close as possible to the work area.

We sometimes have to weld for MOT failure (called NCT over here), if you weld before the test you can spot weld and cover as usual with filler. If you get a fail in the test, you must fully weld the repair and get it inspected before you fill/finish with paint.
