Welding Lead

I wish to weld some lead for roofing (Code 4 I think it is).

I have been told I need an OxyTurbo 90 torch which I assume has a very small nozzle.

Could a similar small sized nozzle be fitted to full sized gas bottles ?

Ive used a Pencil Burner fitted to a Siever handle, but your better of with Oxy Turbo.

If you have never done it before you will blow holes in the lead.

thanks, shame you cant regulate the flow so its not so potent.

As CW/B, your lead will just disappear. I might be wrong but I seem to recall that lead-burning can only be done on the heavier grades (8lb was quoted) but I doubt that's available easily - 5lb is the heaviest I've seen.

Lead burning can be done on any code lead by a proficient leadworker, although it is usually done on code 4 or above.

Still seems odd why you cant regulate full size gas welding equipment to weld lead, providing you have a good regulator and the right size nozzles, whats the benefit of the OxyTurbo90 equipment ?.

You can get a very fine flame, and far hotter and faster.

Turn it down for upright burning, but if you cant do flat burning you will never be able to weld upright, the lead will run away.

You need a solid base beneath the area that your welding.

You can use oxy acetelyne. - and a small torch . with it`s own small nozzles. Can`t see any benefit to oxy turbo

As above, of course you can use full size bottles with the correct size nozzles to burn code 4 and above. How did they do it for probably a hundred years before the small packs?

When being taught this stuff we were tested: made to burn code 3 for a canopy - not a pretty sight. We also had to weld (with the same equipment different nozzles) sheet copper backgutters and pipe boots. Never again, just tacking it was liable to burn a hole. Fresh copper sheet is the most beautiful material but simply seeing it makes me ill with nerves.
