I don’t do a lot of mig welding so I am looking for something that will be safe but not cost hundreds of pounds. All I have is one of those hand held things at the moment. Can someone tell me what is a good make and what to avoid

This is about the best 'budget' one. Stay away from most things on ebay!
Speedglass are very good but expensive.
If you can find one, go for a Lansec helmet (made by Jackson products i think) definately the best helmet i ever had

Parweld do a sensible helmet, get them for about £50 on ebay... a seller called 'weldequip' does them. Hes a top bloke, sold quite a few to happy customers on a welding forum im on.
Easy to get replacment lenses etc for those aswell.

As said though, steer clear of the cheap chinese ones.

If your prepared to try your luch theres an Esab Eyetech on there. They are professional helmets, probably go for £50-£70 id expect ;)
