We have one of those glass kettles, where the glass lights up blue, whilst it has power, then turns red, when you switch it on.

It stopped lighting up a few months ago, but nevertheless continued to work just fine. I've decoked it (limescale) a few times, since purchase, but this time left it rather longer than normal, because I was testing the ability of a ball of ss wool to prevent the build-up. It sort of helped, but not 100%. Today, I determined to decoke it properly, using acetic acid. It came up sparkling, so I put it on the stand to boil and final rinses - to my surprise, the blue lighting lit, then the red, when switched on.

To reduce limescale never leave it with hot water in, have never descalled my kettle, or needed to.
