I have the WD1600BEVT portable hard drive. It is knocking on a bit now, but worked perfectly until the input socket snapped off 'that little board' that the cable plugs into. I apologise for my ignorance of the correct nomenclature - but it is that little printed circuit board that plugs into the hard drive itself I need. Does this make any sense to anyone out there and does anybody know where I can get a replacement part?

Can you post a picture of the drive and the broken part?
The reference you give just seems to link to the HDD itself.

If it's a 2.5" hard drive that's been put into a portable case you can get a completely new case with electronics for about £6.

Although I would not want to use this for anything important that is not backed up elsewhere as mechanical hard drives are affected with being knocked, dropped, banged and generally carried around.
A drop could send the heads crashing across the platter and making it unusable.

Search for "2.5" external drive case" on Amazon etc.

Thanks for the replies - I have uploaded a picture as requested.

You could get a USB to SATA adapter - a HDD like yours usually requires an additional power supply to get the drive spinning.
Example here...

Alternatively, if you have a desktop PC, you may already have spare SATA power and data cables within the case, that the drive can be directly connected to.

After backing up this drive, it may be worth retiring it and getting a replacement portable SSD; they are cheap, have more storage space than your old drive, and are far faster.

That PCB is the PCB from an external drive case.

Simply buy a new one, it will cost far less than pithing around, it will work and entirely enclose your drive safely.
You will probably need one that has a double USB lead to provide both power and data connections for the drive.

Again, back it up and replace it with an SSD (placed in the drive case you buy so you can access this drive) and then restore your files to the SSD.
The drive access speeds will be many times faster, and you can swing an SSD around without fear of damaging it like you do with your drive.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply folks. However none of them really solve my problem and the fault is probably mine for not explaining better.
I have attached a better photo to illustrate what I am after.
Part A is what the power/data lead plugs into - and this has broken off Part B.
Part B plugs into the hard dive itself.
Part C is obviously the hard drive, removed from its plastic case.
What I need is a new Part B with Part A intact.
I have another 2TB hard drive - but I'd like to re-use this one if possible, I hate throwing things away when they can be repaired.

Many thanks for your indulgence.

On the other hand, what I have posted EXACTLY sorts out your problem.

Buy a new case, they come with parts A & B in them.

Unless your able to share more about what this goes into and the exact details of the PCB and connector then the best advise your going to get here is simply: Get a new enclosure.
They cost under a tenner! You will spend more than that farting around trying to get your current board repaired or replaced.

It's a hard drive, it does NOT have to go into the enclosure it was previously in, it just doen't.

That drive is life expired - it's 14 YEARS OLD. Miracle that it still works at all.

If there are things on it that do not exist elsewhere buy the case or adaptor and copy the files to another device.
If those other copies already exist, it's destination is recycling.
If you really need a low capacity portable storage device to replace it, then get one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-USB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00YFI1A66/
