What building material to fill gap between top of window and lintel

There's a large (8mm) gap between the top of my timber window/door and the lintel.

The original material appears to have shrunk and it has left the gap.

What would be the best material to use to fill this gap? Silicone?

Also, do I need to remove the existing material?

Expanding foam cut back when dry then finish off with a length of 25mm flat plate from eurocell the same colour as doors.
Then silicone.
