All depends on what the finish is. You could always try something like Webrax on a drill (or better still a sander) running at 1500 rpm or so to clean off the surface and then refinish it with polyirethane, wax or whatever takes your fancy. The Webrax is like a very fine form of Scotchbrite and is available from some abrasive companies. Use with a very light touch and never stop as you are buffing.
