A curse?

What, like ... You are cursed such that your head will fall off at an unfortunate moment or that your testi cles will turn into bicycles and backpedal up your ars e?

As the great George Bernard Shaw wrote, "When men started to abuse each other with swear words instead of clubs, civilization took a great step forward" In my opinion, abusing one's fellow men with a few choice swear words, instead of violence, is a necessary part of our lives and it should continue. It is a great weapon in anyone's armoury if a bit of emphasis is required when confronting the scoundrels and the scumbags.
But, what constitutes a swear word? That four letter word, usually followed by "off", now very popular, is, I think, one of the best because, those to whom it is directed, are in no doubt as to the venom conveyed by the user of the phrase and, in uttering it, the user offends, only slightly, those to whom it was not directed, but were near enough to hear it, who don't know what it means, and, because of their self satisfying hypocrisy, are somewhat offended. That is always very satisfying.
As long as a swear word does not offend the innocent, or cause upset to someone on the grounds of their beliefs, looks, or mental abilities etc, the use of swear words is a social lubricant which we can ill afford to lose.

Surely to be biologically accurate, they would back-pedal up into the cavity from whence they came before landing heavily into your scro tum.

Surely to be physically accurate, if they backpedalled they wouldn't go anywhere

Can I call someone "an old shoe" or "a dog" - which is abuse in some parts of the world

What about swearing on the Bible, why can't I do that here if I can do it in court?

a curse or a blaspheme are also considered swearing.
I never said a word!

And I assume George Bernard Shaw would see that as fair comment. :D

The surprizing thing about swear words, if you stop and think about it, is how few of them there are. Swear 'words' make up a much greater fraction of the limited vocabulary of other social species.

I would say that any word can be a swear word if it's used in the right - or wrong - context. It's great fun to make them up. How about "Smeghead" (from Red Dwarf) or "Gallon Glass Jars" (my mother, by accident    ). Of course it won't be a 'real' swear word unless somebody tries to suppress it. :( :( :(

Pick a word - almost any word will do - and say it often enough in an appropriate context, like when you've just hit your thumb instead of the nail, and you've got yourself a new swear word. Now put it on a TV show so that lots of people hear it and start using it. Eventually, if you're lucky, somebody will try to suppress it.   Bravo! You just invented a new swear word! :D :D :D
