What do I use to paint new Pine staircase black? A stain or paint?

I've recently had a new Pine staircase with Glass fitted. I need to Paint it black but conscious if I use certain paints it will chip and you will see the colour of the pine underneath.
Any advice on the best paint or stain to use?
