What is causing this water leak?

Hi all.

I've noticed recently water is streaming from on overflow that extends out of the eaves from the loft. The pipe looks like it's coming from the cold water tank - but the bottom of it, rather than the top, so it doesn't look like an overflow as such.

We've recently had a new boiler installed, but the water was leaking before that, and also there doesn't seem to be any obvious connection with hot water or heating being on - it seems to be more random than that.

Any ideas what would cause this? Thanks.

if someone ran an overflow through the wall of the tank, put an elbow on and cut a length of pipe to the height of water required in the tank then the overflow would come out of the bottom (like in some bog cisterns). in practice though it'd be a lot of hassle for a cosmetic effect in a loft. have a proper look at the cold water overflow and feed & expansion (if you have one)

the ball float valve will want adjusting, a new washer or for a cheap and simple solution - replacing.

I see, thanks.

The cold water tank is sealed up in a black insulation wrapping - is it easy to get into it and have a look?

Drape or wrap a piece of rubber around the leaking joint. After that apply a stainless-steel hose clamp. If you don’t have rubber for fixation, then you can use a piece of garden hose around the area of leak to cover the hole in the pipe and also around the areas of hole in the pipe.

Or

You can install pipe clamps that are specifically designed to fix leaking pipes. You just have to fix or place the clamp over the hole, tighten the screws thereby making a permanent seal.

I am not sure th OP thinks the pipe itself is leaking...

The tank can be stripped of its clothes while you sort out the problem - just remember to put it back again afterwards.

If the tank is "overflowing" its because, as was said, the ballcock is not closing properly. Just waggling it up and down CAN free it, but be prepared to fit new washer or new balcock, both of which are simple jobs.
