What is the best way to hang this mirror?

Hi, I've bought a fairly heavy oval mirror (33 inches x 27 inches) that I would like to hang above the fireplace but I am not sure what the best way to go about it is.

Behind the chimney breast plaster there's a mix of old bricks and mortar as well as a wooden lintel mixed in ( see attached pic). Would I be best drilling in a couple of long screws with hooks to hang the mirror by it's hanging wire?

The mirror currently has some rope at the back, should i replace this with hanging wire?

What would be the best way to go about it? Any particular screws that anyone could recommend?

Replacing the old string with wire would seem a sensible thing to do. I'd go for the simplest solution of all and use a 50mm screw or two in a rawlpug and hang the wire over the heads. Ideally you need to make sure that you drill into brick and not mortar, but as the mirror will be covering the area it won't matter if it takes a couple of unlucky, bugger it, missed attempts before you find solid brick.

Hanging a heavy mirror on a piece of wire over a single screw in the wall is asking for trouble IMHO.

Why not use a pair of made-for-the-job interlocking flush picture/mirror mounting brackets. See image:

You ca get 2 screw and 4 screw varieties and depending on the weight of the mirror one in the middle might be enough, or a pair either side for peace of mind, esp if you're worried about the wall being a bit friable. Takes longer to mark it out properly, but its a better job.

Exactly what I would recommend for the job. A b*gger to measure but secure....and makes cleaning easy because the mirror will not be moving around.
