What is this? Asbestos?

Hi. We've just removed the skirting boards in our victorian terraced house and we have found some black gunk/fluff. What is it? We're worried it could be asbestos.

It looks like the usual fluff, spiders webs and dust that always accumulates there Jim, no need for asbestos to have ever been in that area.

I'd say it was soot combined with lint/dust. Well known to every tradesman who's ever worked on coal-fire heated buildings.
