I have just bought an old old house and I found the pipe in the picture below. What is it for? I do not know if it is 'operational'

Thanks

It is a Micropoint Socket (bit of a mis-nomer) fitting for attaching a Micropoint Cooker Hose to.

Oh thanks, so I take it this is not the main gas supply but it is connected to the gas supply pipe which must have another branch going to the boiler. right? (there is no boiler there)

It is just a gas supply pipe for a free standing cooker. You should have it capped of by a registered gas installer until such time as you are to have an appliance connected.

The gas is cut off while I refurbish the house anyhow, then the plumber will do the necessary connections. Just because I am a worrier, can people confirm if this this the proper gas cut off for the whole house, with the lever in the position shown on the photo (in the meter box)?

yes that is the gas off. however meter should be capped if work is being done in the house that could result in an open end on any gas pipe inside house. in case anyone should turn that valve back on

The gas isn't cut off, it is turned off. Get someone to disc off or cap off the meter for you then you can wok safely inside. Don't let anyone work on your gas pipe work without doing this.
