What is this?

Can someone tell me what this is? It is attached to the CH part of my indirect cylinder, just after it leaves the tank.

It has a float valve in it which releases the air as it rises to the top.....if you close the screw down the air wont come out any more
 
I keep getting air in my system, does that mean that it is not working? Do the floats get stuck?
 
Sorry Steve, don't wish to hijack your post. Are these things maintainable? When I loosen the plastic vent screw, mine weeps water. Presumably this could mean the float is stuck. Do I just replace it?

If it weeps water it means it is functioning correctly :D
If air is present float or fibre washer drops allowing air to escape. Water level will then reseal hole.
Manual vents are unscrewed and 'bled' similar to bleeding a radiator :)
 
Fitted to return pipe (negative pressure side of pump. it can draw in air as well
