I'm very interested to note that the grout lines should be level / slightly convex in relation to the top face of the tiles. My tiles are large rectangular, porcelain, with square corners that have the look of natural stone. The floor tiles have recently been laid and a lot of the grout lines are a few millimetres below the visible face of the tiles. Debris is already accumulating in the troughs between adjacent tiles.
I'll ask the tiler to rake out the grout lines and replace the grout. I hope he won't take offence!
We have the same issue with recessed grout below level of large porcelain tiles with square edges. Did your solution work? Was the grout removed before re-grouting?
Thanks for your reply. How long did it take them to remove the grout and how was it done? I'm concerned that our tiler will bulk at this as he has already indicated that it is okay to just add fresh grout on top of existing. Did you have any sharp edging remaining? We have some tiles with more than 1 mm difference in height to the next tile!
Sorry for the delay in replying. The grout was rock hard and had to be removed with a power tool and blade. I'm not exactly sure what was used. It was removed fairly quickly. No sharp edges were left. See picture for idea of what it was like before it was re-grouted.
