having problems and hearing different solutions for what wall plugs to use for ceramic tiles on a studded wall, to avoid cracking tiles. fixing studs in place beforehand wasnt an option. advice much appreciated...
yes tapping plugs below the tiles help on a solid wall but not on plasterboard
i personally would use a brown plug and a 8 gauge[no8 screw]1 3/4" or 4.5mm x45mm screw push the plug flush the large plug will grip and the small screw will grip without over expanding and cracking the tile
ideally you should where possible have some woodwork where the screws need to go but not always possible
I have the same problem in the upstairs of my house as it's all paper honeycomb with plasterboard on both sides, the easiest way I have found for securing Radiators and cupboards is to drill the hole into the wall (through the tile and the plasterboard) then fill a few empty caulk cartridges with either plaster or polyfiller and pump the void full, then push the plug into the hole and let the whole lot dry (can take several days !), then using a one size smaller then recommended screw for the plug. (if that makes sence) so as not the burst the filler or expand the plug so it cracks the tiles.
