Hope someone can help i am renovating a farmhouse in france and i need to knock through the gable end wall which is 53cm thick, the opening will be 2.4 mtr wide and the gable end is constructed from random stone/granite both sides with rubble infill. The property will not have foundations as they are normally built on the rock so i am told.
I will be leaving 2mtrs of gable end on one side and 5mtrs on the other,

cheers geoff

this doesn't sound like a diy job to me, depending on the size of the rubble it will either be a b****** or a f****** b****** to prop then you'll need to install at least two quite big steel beams which will need to be supported on concrete pads, i advise you cast-in-situ because of the rubble and then you have the task of building in all the gaps between the rubble and the beam, then the gaps left by the prop needles. If you do any of these stages wrong.... bye bye gable

Yup, get some beams designed by an SE, and get a builder to put them in...then you've got someone to sue if it all goes tits up :p
