i removed a patress wall box to try and photograph this.

inside i have plasterboard panels with a cardboard lattice in between, then an air gap, then what looks like granite pebbles stuck together?

I'd like to hang a TV on this wall. I've found studs in the plasterboard wall 120mm apart which is pretty wide and i don't know how they are in turn fixed to the solid wall. I could go straight through and fasten to the outside wall, but how?! the stone chips are extermely hard and the drill wanders.

thanks,

Its no fines.

A chemical, or an expansive or toggle fixing will do

FWIW, if you want to screw into a difficult wall, you can either use a chemical "glue" anchor sold for the purpose or, more cheaply, drill a hole which is wide enough and deep enough for your screw and plasplug. It does not matter if the hole is a bit loose. Then wash out all the dust from the hole, and fill it with NoMoreNails or similar, pushing the nozzle to the very back of the hole and slowly withdrawing it as you fill, so there is no air gap, then push your plasplug into the fresh adhesive, centre it, smooth off the adhesive and leave it to set overnight. Once hard, you will be able to drive your screw into it and will have a firm strong fixing, the plug will not turn or come loose.

The screws and plugs need to be long enough to penetrate well into the wall (not the plaster) and the plugs should be pushed slightly below the surface

If you wall is fundamentally weak, you may need to use several screws, widely spaced. In your case I would be inclined to fix a pair of large vertical battens to the wall under the plasterboard, and hang my TV off them.

Oh I see what you mean woody.

JohnD, thanks for your explanation. Very clear, i can manage something like that.....I had a feeling someone was going to suggest battens between the solid wall and plasterboard :S
