I have just had a flat roof put in on an extension. It has a layer of undercoat and then a layer of the self adhensive felt on the top. All the 'suspect' areas have a third layer of felt also.

The extension is directly beneath the back windows so looks un-sightly. In my last place, the flat roof was covered with small stones which was better on the eye.

Is there any special type of stone I need to use for this? Is it true this also helps the roof my keeping the sun of it?

cheers

Your roofing merchants can supply the stones.

The stones does 3 things,
1, Help to keep the roof fire resistance.
2, To break up the rain into fine mists and keep the noise level down.
3, To protect the roofing felt from perishing and heat melting the bitumen.

The standard type of stones to use are 6mm Limestone Chippings, which cost from a roofing merchant about £3.00 for a 40Kg bag, which will cover about 2-3m2.
