Hi all,

I am looking at converting an internal garage to a home office.

Firstly, what is the likelihood of underpinning being required to hold the wall? The house is a standard 1960s detached.

Secondly, in terms of building regs, can we just notify building control and away we go?

Thanks in advance

Which wall? - the one replacing the garage door? If you decide to build a brick/block cavity wall you'll probably need new foundations cos good odds there won't be much under the floor slab. BUT assuming there's already an adequate lintel above the garage door (up to you to check, if the garage door is timber there might not be) then you could look at some sort of timber frame structure that keeps the wind and rain out but isn't structural and an internal non-loadbearing wall of thermalite blocks
How is parking in your area? Do you have enough space on the driveway to park a couple of cars? Check you still have PD rights (your local council should be able to give you this info)
Have a look at the Planning Portal- there's all sorts of useful info on there
