What telephone wire

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, I can't find it mentioned. A lot of posts here say to go for a quality telephone wire, rather than a cheap one, but is there a recognised quality standard for telephone wire and if so, what is it?

Avoid the flat types, often known as under carpet wire. Telephone wire should be twisted pair, i.e each pair of wires is twisted round each other. Even more important if you have broadband. And don't use internal white stuff on the outside of your house, it goes brittle in the sunlight, then lets water in and goes faulty. Solid core rather than multistranded stuff is better as well.

Level 1 (aka Cat 1) is telephone wire - unsheilded twisted pair. You can use something like Cat 5 if you want, but there is no real benefit.

CW1308 Twisted Pair is the standard of cable used by a BT engineer. Cat5 is an even higher standard of twisted pair cable if you want to push the boat out.

If it is for broadband these people take apart and test broadband filters. But their neutrality cannot be determined as they also make and review their own filters.

I purchased my filters and cable off them and found them helpful when I e-mailed them with a technical question.

Thanks. I'll probably go with the CW1308. I do have broadband, but I think it'll do the trick. Easier to route than CAT5 or CAT6 as well, I expect.
