This may have been asked before but I couldn't find anything.
I have a 1930s house with exposed rafter tails. They are black and it looks like they have been stained (not painted), perhaps originally with creosote.
I'm have some scaffolding up for other work later in the month and wanted to re-stain the rafter tails (some are looking a bit weathered).
Question is - what should I use? Can't find anything obviously black and if they were originally creosoted - what can I use as a replacement? Don't want to have to do it again for at least another 10 years.
