Hi all, have an old gas fire in my sitting room which I want to replace and looking for a Black Friday deal on the internet. When the old fire was removed all there was in the wall was a hole where the fumes went up into chimney and out of the pot on the roof. Once the hole was made larger we found that there was no fire back at all, just a large rectangular opening. I am looking for a gas open face fire (no glass front) that will suit, any help on that would be appreciated, thanks for your time!

I think you need to look into a flue liner being fitted, BB and being directly connected to the proposed gas fire outlet.
My own glass fronted fire exhausts into a chimney void. I was told that the chimney was sound (constructed from cast round blocks) but it was vital to seal the fire outlet to the blocked off arch - so there was no way fumes could escape from around the fire. A sheet of asbestolux was used to block off the arch, and the fire exhausted into a rectangular slot cut out and sealed. The floor of the arch was concrete, and the vertical edges sound, well pointed brick.
A spill test was performed to show the chimney was drawing well.
The advice, incidentally, was courtesy of the LPG people that provide my gas cylinders......and I've no idea what legislation is in place at the moment.
I have a CO alarm detector in the room.
John :)
