What water New Silver Didital Home Steam press.

Had problems getting water to pump, dismantled pump will guess the non return valve rubber had got too dry and stuck, so all now working, but I know people often use distilled water, but is it really required? and if so why? would water from the AC be good enough. Got second hand so no instructions, the lock knob is faulty but otherwise seems to be in good order, but never having one before nothing to compare with.
