Must have been a rustic Cherry then. Be aware that Cherry wood is getting pretty expensive nowadays.
The rubberwood I mentioned before is light in colour, but softer than Oak. And with Oak you never can go wrong.
140grit? Depends on the timber. Maple won't sand more than about 180grit, beech will sand up to 250 or more? To get that level of gloss, though you need to go to a sprayed acrylic lacquer - just like a high gloss car. So, grain sealer then 5 to 8 coats of lacquer rubbed out between (up to 1000grit or above with a body polisher) - a true labour of love. (or darned hard work, IMHO)
Ray - beech is OK if a bit bland, for that sort of tone American white oak works well and the grain pattern adds interest to the piece
Looks like Pear to me, As seen in the boardroom at Sunderland AFC, As for the shine i'm sure plenty of clear lacquer (mfr and type unknown) would suffice, sprayed from a compressor and airgun that is then sanded between coats, going up a grade at a time
