What's this?

After finding some 'interesting' things in my 'house of horrors' and posting them here (and having received some very helpful advice):

Any ideas what it might be? The house was built in the 1920s.

something to do with gas maybe?

You got it!

At first, I thought it might be some ancient old electricity socket, perhaps like a clock socket, so I unscrewed it (which you can see from the new screws!). Pulling it out slightly, I found a metal pipe of slightly wider bore than modern gas pipes, so I quickly put it back in case I damaged it. I still don't know whether or not it is 'live', but I thought the best thing would be to leave it where it has been all these years. No hissing or smell of gas!

I suppose another clue is what used to be a fireplace to the left of it, and assume that an earlier occupant had a gas fire.
