We've fitting a new bathroom and have started pulling the tiles off in the shower. Behind them is some kind of cement board rather than plasterboard. Picture below.

Although we've been careful, some of it has broken away from the studwork behind.

Firstly, what is it? I've fitted a bathroom before, but in our old 1950's house, not in a relatively modern one (1990, but this may have been fitted in 2006), so haven't come across it before.

Secondly, should I repair the damage, or just pull it all our and replace with Elements board, or something similar?

Thanks!

The mesh is modern.
I wonder if the dark black stuff is a lightweight ready-mix filler or backing adhesive used in a hole with the mesh over.
