I have a 4ft strip light in my loft which only lights up at each end (about 6") when I have turned it on. I have replaced the light with 1, I know that works but I get the same result. Any ideas how I sort this.

probablly a duff starter

on older fitting the starter is a replaceable unit with very simple cuircuittry inside

modern fittings tend to use electronic starting gear built into the fitting which lasts much longer but if it fails its pretty much time for a new fitting

Some are so sophisticated they put the old fashioned starter inside the casing, instead of sticking out the side. Looks like half a tube of polo mints, only white with two contacts one end. twist to remove.

last week three of my low energy light bulbs gave up the ghost

and funny enough notice my grill was sssssllllloooower than normal

now i undersand electrics quite well [no electrician though]
now fault finding would have said multiple symtoms
but didnt put 2 and 2 together
next day power cut phoned the rec oh yeh weve been
having trouble for days "CAACHHIINNGG"
penny drops low voltage although computer and tv were ok

fished the l e bulbs out the bin they worked fine
now these bulbs are on there way out so the slight reduction
in voltage just simulates what they will be like soon
i just though have you tried the tubes in another fitting
to see if its volt reduction causing the problem

These days items like that have universal power supplies that will work with any domestic voltage found anywhere in the world, e.g. 100-250V

i suppose its simmilar to the bocsh and dewalt battery chargers

they carge up 7.2v to 18v batteries without you doing anything
to tell the charger the voltage
i assume the charger assumes a low voltage then builds up
untill certain resistance values are met

and the tv computer assumes high voltage and works down
