What’s this valve for!?

Soo I’m looking at changing the solenoid on my three way valve (hence it’s not on in the picture) but looking at the system I cannot work out what the branch offtake between the pump and the three way valve is? Take a look at the pic

Ok so should the valve be open or closed during normal operation... bypass makes it sound like it should be closed... but didn’t the system need an air separator all the time??

It’s making some very annoying clicking noises and whenever the boiler is on we get hot water and heating, no matter what the setting on the timer

Air seperators were snake oile and block for fun , doubt if it will still be working

The leg from the gate valve doesn't go into the top of the airsep- I thought it did as well & that would make no sense at all but it drops just behind the top tube coming out of the airsep (which presumably goes to the vent). Almost certainly paupers bypass. I fitted one of those air separators- whether it did any good or not I have no idea but system ran fine for 28 years.
