Hi guys.

I notice a lot of people struggle rolling a wheelie bins down their outdoor steps when they're full, or even when they're empty as it's pulled up the steps.

I accidentally came up with this in a web search and contemplated whether it is the perfect solution to all our wheelie bin problems. It looks easy enough to construct and a few well placed anchor bolts, with a few weld points, and it's good to go.

What do you think? any flaws? Modifications?

Wheelie bins do not have brakes. That continuous slope would make controlling the bin very difficult. Steps prevent the bin moving more an a few inches at a time.

I see. So what would you suggest as a modification?

the only safe system is one that stops movement when you let go like a dead mans handle
a bit like a wheel chair lift or a motorized step troly

You've got me thinking now. A miniature speed bump like points along the run would work too.

Big All, if what you said was taken into consideration, as sensible and safe as it your idea is, mass produced design, low cost and easy to install, by local builders, would be hindered. Reminds me of that over engineered plasters aluminium scoop sold by Refina

Get an old stannah stair lift...

A heavy bin is going to pull you down, that one shown is I think for suitcases or bikes etc & not wheelie bins.

If I had a set of stairs like that then I'd refuse to use a wheelie bin, a chute and bin bags down to a big bin at the bottom would be the way to go.

what you need to remember if you sell something to the general public for a specific task it must be fairly foolproof
so if you sell it as a wheelie bin stair transport then it must be able to be used by anyone off any ability to be fit for purpose unless you have exclusions like age or weight

Essentially, if your stairs are like the ones pictured then contact the council - they have provided a completely unsuitable solution to the bins problem - they have made it unsafe and dangerous so they need to provide a solution.

If your wanting to start a business that provides solutions to situations like this then you need to be idiotproof, OAP proof, disabledproof and bloodymindedproof - if any of them can let go of a full bin then the consiquences could be tragic. I see it in the papers now, "child run over by wheely bin on stair rails". :)

Whoa!!!!! You hit the nail on the head!!!!

OR EVEN BETTER??

Nut and bolt the three wheels onto teh wheelie bin? :)

I'm unwell at the moment and my solution was to apply to the council for an Assisted Lift so that the bin men can come onto your property and do it for you if you're infirm or elderly. I believe all councils offer this. I can't see a situation where anyone would be expected to get a wheelie down a flight of stairs like that but even if they were, that's not the solution. It's a major trip/fall hazard.
