Is there anywhere to get Tung Oil searched B&Q and cannot find it online, where would the cheapest place to buy it? Would a Timber Yard sell it?

Also is there such thing as a good make, Ronseal etc?

And how much roughly does it cost per ltr?

Many thanks

I get mine from here

Cheaper to buy 5 litres can (approximately £8.40 per litre)

Thanks, I've never used it before is it just like any vanish?

Would it need watering down at all? It's to be used on shiplap.

Also what color is it, does it stain a little darker than the natural finish i have now?

Tung oil is a amber colour, then mix it with white spirit 50/50 to start with, then break down the ratio after that, the details is on the tin, so easy to do, just rub it on with a lint free cloth. The more you put on the better and it does go along way, it work out cheaper than all the wood treatments I've used.

The wood colour will go sort of slightly darker.

I can post my summerhouse if need be for you look at the colour of the tung oil.

Yes Please Masona.

Can you give me a few pictures (if you have them) as my mate is building a summer house and any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Also is it really that expensive £60 (inc vat and del) for 5 ltr. How long will this go? say i use 4 coats at 50/50 60/40 80/20 100%??

It does sounds expensive but it does go a long way, so it's cheaper and it's a much better wood treatment than any others, you will not be disappointed as it will outlast of all the wood treatments from the diy shed, see here for more details, the chinese been using the tung oil on their boats for years and it's fully waterproof.

I have email Diynot to download the summerhouse picture and believe it or not I've used approximately 1.5 litres of tung oil with 50/50 white spirit to give you some idea of the area coverage of my summerhouse.

Picture to follow..............

Thanks Masona, Hw often do you treat it? Once a year?

After the first 4 coats do you always give it 4 coats?

Thanks for the picture download Mr.Diynot

All that in 1 coat in the picture was just approximately 1.5 litre with 50/50 white spirit!!

I started to put 2 coats per week of 50/50 for the first 4 weeks then I just do it once a year with a ratio of 60/40.

Just has a look at my summerhouse today and it's raining leaving ring mark puddle on the wood as you do when you waxed the car, the water is bouncing of it. I used to use cuprinol wood treatment which cost me more money as it kept soaking in the wood and dried up & looking sorry for itself.

The tung oil is best I've ever used, more details on tung oil here

If you can find Oilman's post which has been mention before you can heat it up warm to 60F and put it on neat although I haven't tried this yet.

Just done some search to get you going,
