Sirius is actually a binary star. Accompanied by Sirius B , it's the brightest star in the winter sky. Quite how you can't find it I don't know.

An hour ago I opened the back door and there was sirius, in the sky right in front of me. So the answer to the question is...it's in our back garden, or it was a short while ago.

Depends whether your looking for Sirius (the star) or Sirius Black (of Harry Potter fame).

If you have an Android phone, download Google Sky Map, and you just point your phone up at the sky and it shows you what you are looking at on the screen. Or if you want to find a particular object it displays arrows telling you which direction to look until you locate it
