Im after a cheap chainsaw to cut a few logs.

Which brand is preferable?

Ryobi or, McCullock?

Cheers!

I'm no great fan of either, but Ryobi spares are fairly easy to get.....that would be the one for me but give me Stihl or Husqvarna every time.
John :)

Petrol.

I totally agree re stihl but can't justify the costs for only using it 2-4 times a year to sort log burner stocks.

You can get a 236 Husqvarna for £170, so if the kids have anything the piggy bank, they'll never miss the extra over a Ryobi? Check out E-Bay for a local supplier. Or a baby Jonsered, which are built by Husqvarna and are almost identical, just usually cheaper. Both will be faster to cut and easier to use, due to their lighter design and both use a low profile bar/chains.

Just explain to the supplier that its only a domestic saw you need, because some of those little commercial saws are expensive.

Though we have a clatter of strimmers all Ryobi and are pretty good. But, they just don't have the name of quality, in chainsaws.

Sorry my mistake, thought you were thinking new. That's different, looks like a 4045 or bigger? At least it has two proper 8mm studs holding on the bar, not like the smaller Ryobi's with that funny hand operated chain tensioner.

As long as you're not giving big money and its starting easy, it should be fine. Loads on E-Bay to give you an idea of the correct price secondhand.

I know everyone bangs on about them but I was given a 2001 Stihl MS260 (026), battered and covered in mould. Had about 8 years of use by an arborist. New plug, a lot of cleaning and compressed air, and it does me fine for logs and knocking over the odd tree.

The older stihl saws have the 0 as the prefix (026, 039, etc) the newer ones would be 260 390 etc. Worth knowing if you are ebaying for an older bargain.

Hasn't been mentioned yet, but you must wear steel toes, leggings/trousers and forestry hat when using the saw.

I always think of this when I'm using the saw, stay focused!
