which encryption program ?

Look for PGP. It's a free dual key encryption program. It's primary function is the creation and authentication of private/public key pairs for secure communications over the internet but I tried it once and I'm sure it included a means to create virtual encrypted disks on your hard disk.

I agree, all the windows users in work use truecrypt to protect customer data they've downloaded onto their laptop.
You can allocate a chunk of disk space for the encrypted volume to use. Mount it as a new drive (e.g. z drive) and use it just like the c drive.

Most comprehensive solution for a new laptop is Safeboot who have just been acquired by McAfee.
Once installed the entire hard disk is encrypted and you log on to safeboot as part of the early stage boot process.
From this point forward the encryption is transparent.
Forget the username and password though and the hard drive would only be good for use as a doorstop.
