Hi

I’m converting my garage and need to move a beam from being below the ceiling joist to above them. I’ve attached a picture of the current configuration but it’s going to mean having to box the beam in so I’d rather it moved. Just trying to figure out what the best config would be. It’s a single garage with a sloped tiled roof.

plan is to move the same beam above the joists and then connect it via joist hangers. Any advice on which ones are best to use would be appreciated.
Thanks

How will the joists currently above the beam be supported when underneath it?

By the beam. So looking to attach them via joist hangers. Beam will be attached to the wall as it is now but above the joists.

Are you doing a building regs compliant conversion - If so, I would’ve thought you would remove the whole flat roof and replace with a warm roof.

Surely you want it level (at the bottom) with the joists, can't see what you gain from putting it any higher, and use standard jiffy hangars fixed with twist nails.

yeah doing building regs. It’s not a flat roof it’s a sloped roof.

I’m not sure I follow you. The beam runs perpendicular to the joists so you can’t put it level? It’s got to be above or below?

If you want to put it above then use "long legged" joist hangers.

Either way you'll need a bit of thought as to how you pick up that joist against the wall as you'll struggle to get a hangar on it.

Ah so you’d cut through and do it that way. Does make sense. I’ve only got 2 acro props so will have to have one each side. Are there not risks cutting through it in situ though?

You can’t cut those joists - it’s a pitched roof and those joists are stopping the roof spread.

you don’t need joist hangers you need heavy duty twist straps like these

Had some delays but I’m due to sort this within the next week. Would building regs be likely to sign off on using twist straps? To me the beam seems excessive as there is already one at the front and back of the garage. The depth is about 4m so it’s not huge.

I’ve added some more photos if that helps.
There are 6 joists in total. Would you put a strap each side so 12 straps in total?

Thanks for all the advice. Did it a few weeks back. Thought I’d post some photos for completeness in case anyone else wanted to see it.
