Ive been looking at a Honda IZY HRG 466 push mower and recently came across the Stihl RM 448TC for £40 more. Its self propelled and composite deck. I know Stihl are generally decent. Which would people recommend?

Or are the any other suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know about the mowers above but I'd say go self propelled, now I've got one I'm not sure how I managed so long without one.

Whatever you choose, the Honda is petrol, the Stihl is battery powered so it may depend on the size of the job you have for it.
I’d always recommend a self propelled machine.
The Stihl deck won’t rust, the Honda will but it will give years of reliable service.
The Stihl is much lighter, if weight is an issue.

If you've got a dry shed to store it in, and don't cut grass when wet (you shouldn't anyway) go with the Honda, they are a joy to use. Even better when run on Aspen.

They're both petrol, maybe I wrote down the wrong model. Its the 448 t

Apparently the plastic grass box makes it good at collecting the grass

Apologies I’m sure it was my mistake.
I dont think there’s a great deal to split between these two machines......I prefer Honda engines to Briggs but the latter is much better than they were.
Deck rusting is the Izy achilles, a yearly clean and paint serves very well. Pattern parts are readily available and cheap.
Would an 18” cut serve you better?
John

They're both 18" i think. Thats the smallest I would go to.

The Stihl isn't Briggs anymore (which sounds difficult to get serviced). They're made by another large small engine manufacturer and rebranded i think.

What do you mean by Pattern parts?

Pattern parts are those that fit - hopefully made to original specifications.
An example is.....Izy blade genuine Honda - around £40. Pattern blade by War Tec or someone, £15 and just as good.
The same applies for air filters, drive belts, filters, control cables etc.
I've no idea who makes the engines for the Stihl machines - all I've seen have been Briggs but they don't come my way often. Even the Viking tractors used Briggs until recently.
Don't worry about the servicing - change the oil, learn how to sharpen the blade and either will last for years!
Good luck with your choice - we'd like to know!
regards
John :)

Oh i don't know, this is tough.

This is the one, i think the old model was 16". The Honda self drive is a little pricey

Im fine with the servicing myself but I think that voids the warranty

Thanks for the advice

I've had the 416 izy for 12 years with no problems, the deck hasn't corroded at all but its been cleaned after each use. I recently tried out a Mountfield sp53. Its bigger wheels make it such more manoeuvrable than the izy, imo, and it has the honda engine. It seemed to have better grass collection as well. And quite a bit cheaper than the 466. So I would consider that as a replacement.

Thats where is started and might go back to. I guess as long as the engine is decent the rest can be easily repaired. 5 year warranty too
