Hi All,

After the recent wonderful weather we've had this winter and the beautiful pattern the penetrating damp has formed across my downstairs walls, I thought it best to deal with weatherproofing the wall.

I have had about 150 spalled bricks replaced, new retrofit stainless steel wall ties put in, old ones disengaged and the entire wall repointed in lime so that it is back to the original look of the house. The cavity has been cleared also.

I have been told that it would be a good idea to have the brickwork treated to stop any water from potentially coming in again.

I've been told by builders that Thompson's water seal is good, but I've been told by damp-proof specialists that Stormdry paste by Safeguard is much more effective.

The cost difference is massive. Thompson's comes in at about £20 per 5 litres and Stormdry at about £125 per 5 litres. I'm going to need about 3 tins of either as the coverage seems to be the same.

I'm after a breathable product. For this, Stormdry seems to be the better product. Does anyone know if it is worth the extra money? Also, where it is a new product, does it fall into the realm of cavity wall insulation; which at first seemed like the best thing since sliced bread only to turn out as the biggest waste of money and cause of hassle ever!?

Stormdry looks to dry clear with no change in the appearance of the brick work. Does anyone know if this the same for the Thompson's? I didn't want a shiny finish.

Many thanks!

Who do you trust most? I know which one I'd be going with.
