My Blackberry is just about to give up the ghost and since I don't use the email facility on it any longer (too much poxy spam), but like and have got used to a QWERTY keypad, what alternative phone/s with the same type of keypad, rather than alphanumeric, can anyone recommend? I don't want a camera, don't want internet or music, just a phone, pure and simple, if such a beast exists.

Ideas?

Don't want a camera! Tut Tut. Haven't you ever needed to take a picture there and then and possible send it to someone for a look?

Did you see my post in the tools section - my phones' got a level built into it!. Its a PocketPC, and I'm also looking at some CAD software that will run on the phone, take the measurements bluetoothed to it by a DISTO and draw up floor plans! .... If it works

Anyhow, the Nokia E71 comes to mind - its blackberry-esq and works quite well by all accounts

If you want a qwerty keyboard then a blackberry or its various clones are your only option.

I was recently "telesalesed" into the new BT "to-go" handset (like a bargain-basement blackberry) - only £5 per month on top of my broadband. Verdict - it's rubbish. Unfortunately I played around with it longer than the 14 day cooling off period so I'm stuck with it for 18 months. Still, £90 then it's gone, could be worse - I'm sure despite it's cr*pness it's worth more than that (I should probably sell it on eBay!)

I have found that my regular phone, a Sony Ericsson K850i, does everything the BT thing can, only faster and more reliably - even GPRS internet access. The only thing the BT thing can do that the SE can't is surf for free whilst connected to my wi-fi network at home. WHY would I need that when I have two perfectly good computers if I happen to be here?

My advice to you would be to learn the ways of predictive text (therefore negating the need for a qwerty keyboard) and then pick yourself out a high spec phone that will do what you need. Obviously my personal recommendation is a SE, but many people prefer a nokia and you may find that suits you better.

But what's certain is that if you don't want on-the-fly email or such gubbins, you DON'T need a blackberry.

Ninebob, the BB is predictive, it's just got a QWERTY arrangement, which I've got used to over five years - I did have numerous Nokias before with the alphanumeric, I just don't fancy having to relearn where each letter is! I was getting so much spam, though, it was costing me about £30/month just to download craap, so I turned the most useful function off .

Woody: I've got two digicams, one of which is always in the car, so yet another camera is just a waste. However, I will go and look at your tools section post, sounds interesting.

Thanks for the advice, guys

Yeh. I'd prefer something without all the pointless add-ons. I just want a qwerty phone!!!

Cheers Tim!

Hmm, quite nice, kinda like the BB, albeit with more gubbins that I don't really need. £399 though...eek.

I've got an N95 as well, by far and away the worst phone I've ever had.
