which stanley plane to get

Am looking to get a stanley/bailey bench plane but was wondering which was the best one to start with.

Am i right in thinking that a 4 1/2 or 5 would be the best allrounder.

I don't make any fine furniture or anything like that!! - just for general DIY /basic woodworking tasks.

Will be a gift from a relative, so budget up to £70 or so.

Any other suggestions welcome - are cheaper makes worth getting to start with or is best just to invest in a decent one that will last??

I like my ancient Record No.4 smoothing plane....I've had it for more years than I wan't to remember and it always performs well. Another good investment is a quality oil stone...!
