Do you mean a room thermostat, or something that is actually on the boiler?

Probably best to go for a wireless one. Pretty much any you choose will be ok, if you are unsure about the wiring get a heating engineer to do it in case you wreck anything in the boiler.

Thinking about it do i need a thermostat? I have the controls on the radiators and the timer on the boiler to control the heat.

The hot water works at the moment just not the heating as the thermostat has packed in. Is there something that i can just get a sparky to do to take out the connection to the thermostat and eliminate the need for it or am i talking nonsense?

seen now that one is required as part of building regs. Will get a wireless on in that case - i assume this is compatible with the timer on the boiler if that makes a difference?

Sorry, I missed the "replace" in your first post, there my advice has changed from a wireless to a hard wired one, what have you got at the moment?

An old hard wired mechanical one, couldnt see a brand name on it. If im honest i didnt even know it worked i assumed it was just on the wall from the old system as it was a nice brown 70s looking thing.

Im redecorating the hallway and was getting some work done in my kitchen so asked the electrician to remove it whilst he was there. He tested it and nothing was coming through it. Last night after he left the heating wasnt working (wasnt firing up at boiler) but the hot water was, the only things thats been tampered with is the thermostat so must have been connected hence needing to replace it.
